ANIMAL WELFARE PHOTO ESSAYS
'Next In Line' by Amy Jones. IVFF 2020 Photo Essay Contest Finalist - Animal Welfare
'Next In Line' | Amy Jones
Farmed animals endure so many acts of physical and emotional violence throughout their short lives. There is the physical suffering, such as painfully cramped conditions and the horrific slaughter process itself. And there's the emotional violence, like being forced to witness the death of others - something that many of us, as human animals, are rarely exposed to.
These images portray this emotional violence as a moment in time, one where the animals watch the death of another individual, likely with the understanding that they are next in line.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PHOTO ESSAYS
'Aquaculture & Fishing In the Mediterranean' by Selene Magnolia. IVFF 2020 Photo Essay Contest Finalist - Environmental Protection
'Aquaculture & Fishing In the Mediterranean' | Selene Magnolia
As aquaculture and fish industries are shaping and damaging our oceans and planet, the suffering of the fish and the impact of this production is often neglected.
These images are part of a wider documentation about the shocking reality for the fish who are trapped in present-day aquaculture conditions in and around the Mediterranean Sea. These fish suffer slow deaths defined by nets, asphyxiation, ice, and blood. Whether they are the intended targets for a vessel’s trawling nets, or just ‘disposable’ bycatch species caught in the fray, once these animals are extracted from their ocean home and hit a vessel’s deck, they are en route to the same fate. Farmed fish are not spared the pain of this prolonged system either.
Although they experience different challenges within their overcrowded floating pens, farmed fish destined for consumption also face immediate icing as part of the packing process. Though believed to be a quick kill mechanism, the extreme cold can actually keep fish alive and suffering, even as they are packed.

'From Hell In to the Light' | Dora Janowska
"Tierisches Glück" sanctuary (www.instagram.com/tierisches_glueck_lebenshof) is an animal sanctuary in Gütersloh/Germany. The sanctuary is caring for almost 50 animal persons, which were liberated from many different farms, slaughterhouses and dramatic circumstances. Their past was hard and traumatizing. They were beaten, used, forcibly impregnated, injured and/or sick. Now they can live a safe and fearless life.
Since over a year I am documenting their lives.

'Ban Duck Shooting!' by Stefano Belacchi. IVFF 2020 Photo Essay Contest Finalist - Lifestyle
'Ban Duck Shooting!' | Stefano Belacchi
Every year, hunting causes countless deaths among migratory birds and it is estimated to be one of the main threats to these animals.
These photos I took in 2017, portray the direct action of activists from different Melbourne based organizations, which have been interfering with the hunt and have been rescuing injured and dead birds left behind by the hunters. These actions were followed by a demonstration in front of the local government headquarters where the the activists brought the bodies of hundreds of ducks illegally killed and thrown away by hunters. As a result of this demo, the government decided to stop the hunting season.
Activism for animal liberation is an important support for the struggle of all oppressed individuals. Across the world, thousands of activists dedicate most of their lives to these actions and in many cases their commitment has led to extraordinary results. This reportage is my way to support their dedication and a gesture of solidarity with all living beings fighting their emancipation.
